Unlocking the Groove: The Synaesthetics of Experimental Turntablism and Vinyl Sculpture - send + receive festival (Winnipeg, MB, Oct. 14-22, 2005)
 

Radio documentary created by Carrie Gates about the meeting points between experimental turntablism, vinyl sculpture, installation, gatefold bookworks, conceptual art, improvisation, and performance. Featuring artists both well-known and lesser-known, the radio work spans practices from the late 1800s to present day. This radio documentary and accompanying slideshow/database was commissioned by the Winnipeg's 8th annual send + receive festival of international sound art, and the four mp3s of the programme can be downloaded through this link.

Phantom Power (North Bay, ON, May 20-22nd, 2004)
 

Phantom Power is a three-day audio and video festival featuring some of Canada's finest experimental artists. Curated by Dermot WIlson of the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery of North Bay, ON, Phantom Power has invited artists to reflect upon the themes of the supernatural, phantasms, and random frequencies. Performing artists include Kero, Tomas Jirku, tobias C. van Veen, Jon Vaughn, Marinko Jareb, Max Haiven, Magali Babin, Carrie Gates, and Thinkbox. Carrie Gates, Marinko Jareb, and tobias C. van Veen will perform as a live turntablist trio in for the Saturday night festivities. They will also facilitate a workshop in experimental turntablism, vinyl record art, and historical elements of DJ culture on Saturday afternoon at the W.K.P.Kennedy Gallery. This event is sure to be an excellent meeting of minds, movement, sights, and sounds!

5pm sharp! to 8pm - Turntablist Tutorial - DJ lessons by Dragon, Machine and Reva-t. Three professional DJs teach mixing music, scratching, beat juggling, and other tricks of the trade in this very popular workshop. Turntablist Tutorial has been shared with hundreds of teens, young adults, and music professionals at various venues, including the YMCA, high school music classes, Brock University, and Niagara College.

8pm - Vinyl Art and Intervention lecture with Esther Bourdages (E cube, Montreal). An art historian and experimental musician gives an in depth talk on the history of vinyl records as an audio and visual medium for artists.
9pm Vinyl Interventions duplo-duo performace - Esther B. and Machine perform experimental music with the art installation - a specially designed matrix of speakers, record players and audio devices installed in the Dennis Tourbin Members' Gallery at NAC.
10pm - Attack of the Cartoon Ghosts by Stinky - short film premier. Specially made for Phantom Power at WKP Kennedy Gallery in North Bay, May 24 long weekend, this is an exclusive sneak peak of the work that will be presented at the Phantom Power film and music festival. Vinyl Junkie by Satan MacNuggit and Stinky - short film premier.
11pm - 3am - disco 3000 re:union party! - DJ Machine's defunkt weekly clubnight at Gord's Place on James Street returns for one magical night at NAC. Old school dj's, classic tunes, deep vibes and old friends. Come together, the way it used to be.

Digidome Workshop (Saskatoon, Sept 27, 2002)
 

Part of Paved Art + New Media's famous DIGIDOME project, this workshop, facilitated by Carrie Gates, was the meeting point where the Vinyl Interventions project was born! Held in the artist-run centre, AKA Gallery, An historical presentation by Esther B., experimental turntable technique demonstrations by Marinko Jareb, and an exciting workshop audio-visual session with Carrie made this a very interesting afternoon of activities that continues to inspire critical dialogue, performance and installation activities, and valued interprovincial friendships and collaboration.
